Angkor Wat

ANGKOR
WAT

A memorable Xjourney adventure…

Angkor Wat (or Angkor Vat) is a temple located 5.5 km north of the city of Siem Reap, in the province of Cambodia. It is the largest and best well preserved temple of the Angkor settlement. It is also the only one left with important religious significance - initially Hindu, then Buddhist - since its foundation. The temple is the culmination of classical Khmer architecture. It is considered to be the largest religious structure ever built, and one of the most important archaeological treasures in the world. It became a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its flag and being its main tourist attraction. On December 14, 1992 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It is part of the temple complex built in the area of Angkor, the former capital of the Khmer Empire during its period of splendor, between the IXth and XVth centuries.

The word Angkor comes from the Cambodian នគរ Nokor, and in turn the Sanskrit voice नगर Nagara which means "capital", while the word Wat is of Khmer origin and translates as "temple". The name of Angkor Wat is in any case after its creation, since it was originally named Preah Pisnulok; posthumous name of its founder Suryavarman II.
